Tania Head - Liar, Loser or Survivor?

posted by MR WAVETHEORY at 9/27/2007 06:31:00 AM

Tania Head claims she was the top of the World Trade Center during 9/11 and she is a survivor. She claims she only made it down the tower because she wanted to get married with her fiancee Dave, who she claim perished - and hence conveniently, the marriage never happened. Is she a liar or is she a survivor? According to the NY Times, she may be a liar. She missed 3 interviews with the New York Times, failed to be confirmed by Merrill Lynch as an employee. Ironically, she is the head of the 9/11 Survivors Network and has spent alot of time helping others cope with their loss according to blog posts by the community.

She was badly burned by the burning fuel, when a plane hit a floor above her, she saw some of her co-workers die in the flames, and her fiancee was killed in the other tower.

I do not know whether people should feel bad for her or feel bad about her. She was just removed from the World Trade Center Survivors Network as President. How do you feel and what do you think? Liar, loser, or survivor?

With no verification of her education, hospital stay, or employment location on 9/11, it is easy to call her a liar.

She never profited from her story.

It is a curious case.

As a real survivor, I should be angry. But really, I'm just surprised. She interviewed me and got my survivor's story into the Survivor's Network archieve. She also arranged for me to provide input on the evacuation post-mortem - what went well and what didn't.

So I'm shocked.

Thanks for the comments dhalgren. If it's true she never profited from her story, one could argue that she genuinely was interested in helping people. Maybe we should give her kudos for aspiring to be a "Hero." Not everyone gets to be one, but I guess you can give her credit for trying.

I'm in no position to comment on the truth of her claim, but just because she didn't profit monetarily, doesn't mean she didn't profit. She is a high profile, and extremeley sympathetic individual, at the center of one of the biggest events of our times. If her story is untrue, the level of her public disgrace will be one measure how much she profitted.

The New York times seems to have reason to believe her story is not true. After all, the World Trade Center survivors foundation asked her to resign.

Forget the real Tania. Beloved husbands did die that day. So did Harvard grads. So did Yale and Stanford grads. Merrill Lynch employees did die. Cherished items belonging to the dead did find their way back. The myth that she spun is made from real strands. It doesnt matter who she is.

I just read the article on the International Hearld Tribune website and have to say her story is suspicious at best.

I'm not sure if she should be called a liar, but her creditablity seems to be questionable given the fact no one can verify her story.

yes, her story is the story of that thousands of New Yorkers lived through and that's what makes it so powerful. it goes to show that we will believe who we want to believe even if it is not true.

Although I have no connection to 9/11 beyond being a citizen of this country, I am shocked that someone would do this. I suspect she has mental/emotional issues (similar to Munchausen disease). In any case I hope she receives the help she needs. Most importantly I hope that the true 9/11 survivors who were in contact with her feel they received more value than harm from the experience.

I think the survivors needed someone they could relate to and Tania provided that. Hopefully, it was a positive experience and helped bridge their life experience during a traumatic period. I am curious what people who have come into contact with Tania actually think. That would be the true test of whether she is a liar, loser, or survivor.

I am a member of the WTC Survivor
's Network and had direct contact with Tania. This all came as a shock to us, and it's very disappointing. I think she does need help and do not condone what she has done, but aside from selfishly achieving "power" and attention, she did work hard to do what was right for the Survivor's Network and I hope that is not overlooked in the judgment's of her actions. The survivors all have each other to relate to, and Tania was one of us for the last several years, so it saddens us all to know she has not been honest with us. I'm thankful for the efforts she made to unite the network and help get our voices heard. She did work hard. I don't know what her motivation was, but her actions on behalf of the network have been admirable. Her actions on behalf of her own needs, however, are quite questionable.

I think the whole thing could have started with half-truth, "I worked at Merrill Lynch," when in fact she only temped there... or was only there for an interview; the real story might have been too complicated to spell out, so she shortened it. Then more questions came... she may have found herself in front of microphones, in front of faces desperate for words of hope, so it began - elaborations, filling in blanks, borrowing stories from people she saw perish, perhaps...

The transformation she went through next, is the really interesting part. Her tale created a life of its own - she channeled the harrowing experience into a force for Good: giving victims the compassion and leadership they needed, at a critical time.

She apparently made a point not to profit from the work. The work was goodness, regardless of how she came to do it.

I know Tania - or thought I did. It appears she lied to all of us who trusted and believed her. I thought of her as my inspiration of how to pull myself up out of my post 9/11 misery and how to go on living and giving...

Despite the lies she told, she did a lot of good and inspired many. We need to try to keep that feeling of hope alive that she gave many of us in the past few years and not focus so much on being angry.

Of course it is easier said than done (especially for deceased victims' families), but I find I pity her more than am angered by her.

What terrible trauma must she have endured earlier in her life that attaching it to 9/11 was the best way she could find to cope? I have to believe that was her motivation... she was not in it for the money (she has made ZERO from 9/11), perhaps it was for attention and maybe even love (many of us who were associated with her as WTC survivors truly have loved her), but she must have convinced herself that her story was true in order to fool so many close to her for years...
When someone is mentally ill to the point of not being able to distinguish fantasy and reality they need help and not harm...
Remember that forgiveness does not mean you agree with what a person did...

It's interesting to hear both sides of the story which creates mixed feelings about a leader who has shown dedication to a cause, yet also cheated those who need help. I think being genuine is the best policy, but I can see how everyone tries to stretch the truth sometimes. I see it everyday - especially in job interviews, I would be surprised if people don't try to promote themselves and claim responsibility for a job or project that is well done. Many people embellish the truth. I can't blame people for wanting to "self-actualized" Tania may have "stretched" too far and it may have hurt some people. Nevertheless, I am glad to hear that not all of it was bad and that Tania may have done some good. That's what's important. We all end up in the same place at the end. It's all about how we get there.

Although Tania has lain, she made an excellent work in good of the survivors.
Probably her pain is real, her tears are real. Only that her tragedy occurred in another space and another time.
