The Ghetto That is the Long Tailposted by MR WAVETHEORY at 10/30/2006 04:53:00 PM
This is the dilemma: The reason blogs get traffic is because they tend to sources of niche content that you can only find on a few sites. Yet, the very fact that they are niche makes them hard to monetize because advertisers want large numbers of eye balls. How bloggers address this issue is the reason some are successful while others are not.
The paradox is this: niche content is more valuable to users than mass created boiler plate, yet niche content doesn't monetize as well. With this major dilemma, niche content creators fall into a negative spiral, are unable to continue content creation, and therefore niche content creation ceases. I find this to be both an interesting philosophical question as well as an interesting business problem.
